Math Review

Strategies to Multiply:
By the end of grade 4, students are expected to understand and recall multiplication and division facts up to 7x7 off by heart.  To help students get there, here are some strategies they can use.  Not all strategies work for all students, and not all are necessary.  Click here to see more about the math curriculum.
  • Skip count (the songs are great!)
  • Draw an array or picture of the groups
  • Use a multiplication table
  • Practice using flash cards
  • Play a game!

Division Strategies:
  • Use a related multiplication fact
  • Draw an array or picture
  • Sing the multiplication songs
  • Use a multiplication table

Multiplication/Division Games:
  • Multiplication Snap (2 players): Using a deck of cards, deal half to each player.  Each player lays down a card in the middle.  The first one to multiply the cards wins the cards.  To win, get all the cards in your hand.
  • Check out www.multiplication.com
  • Or this page: http://www.multiplication.com/games/all-games
  • Students have accounts to splashmath.com and there are games for multiplying and dividing and they can do basic facts practice.

Times Tables Tricks
The 1’s and 0’s
1 times any number is that number!
1 x 6 = 6    56 x 1 = 56
0 times any number is 0!
0 x 12 = 0    34 x 0 = 0

The 2’s
Double the other factor!
6 x 2 = 12 Just double the 6 and that makes 12!
8 x 2 = 16 Double the 8 and that makes 16!

The 3’s
Double the other factor and then add it one more time!
7 x 3 = 21 Double 7 and that makes 14, then add 7 one more time and you have 21!

The 4’s
Double, double!
12 x 4 = 48
Double 12 and that makes 24.
Double 24 to get 48!

 The 5’s
Skip count by 5’s. You can always use your hands.
5 x 5 = 25
Skip count by 5’s and after you say the 5th number you got it! 5, 10, 15, 20, 25

The 6’s
Multiply by 3 and then double!  Or sing our song and count on your fingers as you sing!
6 x 5 = 30
6, 12, 18, 24, 30!

The 7’s
Sing our song, skip count or use another factor’s trick!

7 x 2 = 14
You can use the 2’s trick!

The 8’s
Double, double, double!  Or sing our song, skip count, or use the other factor’s trick!
8 x 4 = 32
You can use the 4’s trick!

The 9’s
Use the hand trick.
9 x 9 = 81 Hold your hands up, but put down your 9th finger. You will have 8 digits to the left of that finger and 1 to the right – 81!

The 10’s
Write the other factor and add a 0 to it!

5 x 10 = 50
10 x 10 = 100
10 x 11 = 110
