Week of Jan. 29 - Feb. 2, 2018

Curriculum:
  • Math: Division is still going strong.  We are doing a mix of paper/pencil activities and games this week.  You can help at home by practicing basic division facts with your child.  They seem to struggle especially with remembering that the total number needs to be first in the equation e.g. 24 ÷ 4 = 6 not 6 ÷ 4 = 24.  We are learning how division is related to multiplication, but you can't just switch the signs!
  • Language Arts:
    • Spelling: Lesson 8 will conclude with the assessment on Thursday.  You can help at home by having your child sort their words and practice them.  Maybe make up some sentences with some of the words and have them write the whole sentence down, paying special attention to capitals, end punctuation, listening and, of course, the spelling of their list words and any other familiar words!
    • Writing: Our Lost stories are coming along nicely.
  • Science: We had a great time experimenting with levers last week!  This week we will practice what we learned about first, second and third class levers.  You can help at home by asking your child to find levers around the house and point out the fulcrum, effort and load.
  • Social: This week we'll learn about Alberta's oil sands from different perspectives and the other natural resources that the Boreal Forest has to offer such as forestry.

This Week's Schedule:

  • Samayoa and Rahim library books due
  • Friday Letters due
  • Energy Day Assembly 12:45
Tuesday:
  • Hot lunch
  • Nelson library books due
  • Family Fun Night 6:00 p.m.

Week of Jan. 22-26, 2018

This week is a pretty quiet week.  Just our regularly scheduled programming!

Curriculum:
  • Math: We get to dig into division this week!  We'll play some games and complete some activities.  We found this to be very successful for learning multiplication.
  • L.A.
    • Spelling: Lesson 8 starts this week.
    • Writing: Our "Lost" story is underway.  Planning has taken place, and we are working on drafting the stories so we can start taking pictures.
  • Science: This week we'll continue learning about gears and will explore levers on Thursday.
  • Social: In the Boreal Forest region, we'll learn about Lac la Biche, and how forest fires aren't always bad.  We'll also learn about the First Nations connection to the region and will start learning about the oil sands by the end of the week.

This Week's Schedule:
Monday:
  • Samayoa and Rahim library books due
  • Friday Letters due

Tuesday:
  • Nelson library books due
Friday:
  • Frolicking Friday

Monday 15 January 2018

Week of Jan. 15-19, 2018

Sorry about the lack of post last week.

Curriculum:
  • Math: We are working on multiplication basic facts.  We have been playing games and will do some paper/pencil work this week as well.  We are going to finish off the week by starting division.  You can help at home by practicing multiplication facts with your child.  On the math page of the blog are the songs we have learned in class, and we have added some strategies or "tricks" to make multiplying a little easier and a lot more fun!
  • L.A.
    • Spelling: We are on Week 7
    • Writing: No more secrecy!  We hope you enjoyed your Christmas anthologies.  We are starting a new project that combines storytelling and photography.
  • Science: Our new simple machine this week is the gear system.  Don't be surprised if your child has a sudden inclination for dominoes and Rube Goldberg machines!
  • Social: We are now in the Boreal Forest Region this week and are learning about the vegetation (guess what - there are lots of trees!), animal life, and ecosystems.
  • PE: We have the snowshoes on loan right now and so we will be going out to use them as much as possible.  They work best with winter boots rather than runners or other types of shoes.

This Week's Schedule:

  • Samayoa and Rahim library books due
  • Friday Letters due

Tuesday:
  • Order forms for January's free hot lunch due
  • Tone It Up Tuesday
  • Nelson library books due
